- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
- 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup buttermilk

- 1/4 cup milk, or more as needed

- Graduation cap toppers
- Edible glitter

Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9 inch round cake pans.
- In a bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk, ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
- Pour batter evenly into cake pans.
- Bake for 30 35 minutes, or until a skewer comes out clean.
- Let cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before inverting onto a wire rack to cool completely.
- For the frosting, cream the butter until smooth.
- Gradually add the powdered sugar, beating well after each addition.
- Stir in milk and vanilla extract. Beat until light and fluffy.
- Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a generous layer of vanilla buttercream frosting over the top.
- Carefully place the second cake layer on top of the frosting.
- Frost the entire cake with the remaining frosting.
- Decorate with graduation cap toppers, edible glitter, and sprinkles in school colors.
