Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 3/4 cups buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup rolled oats, for topping (optional)
  • 1/4 cup raisins or currants (optional)

Instructions

  1. 1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Grease a baking sheet.
  2. 2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
  3. 3. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients.
  4. 4. Pour in the buttermilk.
  5. 5. Mix until just combined; do not overmix.
  6. 6. Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and shape into a round (1.5 inches thick).
