- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 3/4 cups buttermilk
- 1/4 cup rolled oats, for topping (optional)
- 1/4 cup raisins or currants (optional)
Instructions
- 1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Grease a baking sheet.
- 2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
- 3. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients.
- 4. Pour in the buttermilk.
- 5. Mix until just combined; do not overmix.
- 6. Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and shape into a round (1.5 inches thick).
- 7. Place on the baking sheet.
- 8. Cut a deep cross on top.
- 9. Brush with buttermilk or water and sprinkle with rolled oats, if desired.
- 10. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, until golden brown and hollow sounding.
- 11. Cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
