Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 3/4 cups buttermilk, plus extra for brushing
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
- Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients. Pour in the buttermilk and melted butter.
- Using a wooden spoon or your hands, gently mix the wet and dry ingredients until just combined. Do not overmix!
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Gently shape it into a round loaf, about 1.5 to 2 inches thick.
- Place the loaf on the prepared baking sheet. Using a sharp knife, cut a deep cross (X) into the top of the loaf.
- Brush the top of the loaf with a little extra buttermilk.
- Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the loaf is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Transfer the loaf to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing and serving.
