- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 3/4 cups buttermilk
- 1/4 cup raisins or currants (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C) and grease a baking sheet.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar. Add raisins/currants if using.
- Make a well in the center and pour in buttermilk.
- Mix until just combined – do not overmix.
- Turn dough onto a floured surface and shape into a 1.5-inch thick round loaf.
- Place on baking sheet and cut a deep cross on top.
- Brush with beaten egg (optional).
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean.
- Cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
