Description
A perfectly seared New York strip steak topped with a flavorful garlic herb butter, served with roasted asparagus. An elegant and quick romantic dinner.

- 2 (8-10 ounce) New York strip steaks, about 1-inch thick
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
- 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 pound asparagus, trimmed
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Pat the steaks dry with paper towels and season generously with salt and pepper.
- In a small bowl, combine the softened butter, minced garlic, chopped parsley, thyme, and red pepper flakes (if using). Mix well and set aside.
- Heat olive oil in a heavy bottomed skillet (preferably cast iron) over medium high heat until shimmering.
- Carefully place the steaks in the hot skillet and sear for 3 to 4 minutes on each side for medium rare, or until desired doneness. For medium, cook about 5 to 6 minutes per side. For medium well, cook about 7 to 8 minutes per side. Use a meat thermometer to ensure the internal temperature reaches 130 to 135°F (54 to 57°C) for medium rare.
- During the last minute of cooking, add a generous spoonful of garlic herb butter to the skillet. Tilt the pan and use a spoon to baste the steaks with the melted butter.
- Remove the steaks from the skillet and let them rest for 5 to 10 minutes before slicing. This allows the juices to redistribute, resulting in a more tender steak.
- While the steaks are resting, preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Toss the asparagus with olive oil, salt, and pepper. Spread on a baking sheet and roast for 10 to 12 minutes, or until tender crisp.
- Slice the steaks against the grain and top with any remaining garlic herb butter. Serve immediately with the roasted asparagus.
